Meet Charlestown’s latest More Than a Number, Jim!

Status
Retired.

Have you always been involved in fitness or exercise?
Not really. I only began wishing to improve my fitness when I was introduced to open cross-country ski racing some years ago, and initially did not perform well and wanted to improve.

Did you have a goal when you first joined Planet Fitness?
I planned to perform better in a series of cross-country ski races that I participated in each winter in Perisher Valley. Joining PowerCamp from the start Peter and Vicki set me on a program of training and conditioning that led to a wonderful improvement.

Have you achieved what you originally set out to do?
Yes, being national champion in my age group (men under 70) in classical long distance cross-country ski racing and lowering my personal best time in the 42km international event this year from 4 hours 5 minutes to 3 hours 31 minutes. Both are very pleasing achievements.

What was your perception of gyms/health clubs before you joined? Has it changed after joining Planet Fitness?
Before I entered a gym I was under the impression it would be filled with young, fit people unlike myself. It was refreshing to find in Planet Fitness people of all ages and fitness levels in a “Judgement Free” environment.

What are your fitness goals for the future?
I’ve entered 3 marathons (42km) and 9 ultra-marathons (50-90km) cross-country ski events in the world loppet series in the northern hemisphere in winter 2018 in 10 countries. My goal would be to finish each of these races within the set time.

Biggest obstacles you have had to overcome on your fitness journey?
Organising my life to fit in the optimum amount of time to devote to my fitness program, avoiding injury and the frustration of waiting to restart my program during recovery time.

Do you have sources if inspiration? If so, what are they?
Peter and Vicki have been a tremendous help inspiring me in PowerCamp to improve my fitness and preparing me for each winter cross country ski race season.

What is your weekly fitness regime?
I stretch for 45 minutes at home each morning before attending PowerCamp 6:00am – 7:00am weekdays then an hour or an hour and a half of weights and cardio at Planet Fitness. PowerCamp 8:00am – 9:00am on Saturdays, rest on Sundays.

What is your favourite quote?
