Meet Belmont’s latest More Than a Number, Mat!

Status
Pensioner.

Have you always been involved in fitness or exercise?
I was involved in a lot of sport when I was younger, but as I got older and sustained a few injuries I became less active until more recently.

Did you have a goal when you first joined Planet Fitness?
I joined quite a long time ago and my goal since then has changed from weight loss to just being healthier and more active.

Have you achieved what you originally set out to do?
So far I’m achieving what I set out to do, I’ve lost just over 50kgs and I’m healthier than I’ve been in a long time.

What was your perception of gyms/health clubs before you joined? Has it changed after joining Planet Fitness?
I always saw them as a tool that could be used to better yourself, and that hasn’t really changed.

What are your fitness goals for the future?
Just to continue to live a healthy and active life.

Biggest obstacles you have had to overcome on your fitness journey?
My two biggest obstacles I’ve had to deal with were probably my knees and myself. I injured both my knees when I was younger, and it limits a lot of my options when it comes to cardio and some types of weight training. Maybe bigger than that, was having to change my attitude and approach to how I was living so that I could make the changes necessary to better myself.

Do you have sources of inspiration? If so what are they?
I would say I got a lot of inspiration to start getting healthier from YouTuber “Boogie2988”, who underwent weight loss surgery and documents his journey in his videos. Seeing him go through that really started me thinking about my options and taking my health more seriously.

What advice do you have for those who are thinking of joining Planet Fitness?
Just do it, you won’t regret it.

What is your weekly fitness regime?
I workout in the gym 5 times a week, for 1-1.5 hour doing 30 minutes of cardio followed by weights. I also attend a boxing class.

Favourite quote?
“The circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.”
