85-year-old Jim Arrington is showing no signs of slowing down
Think your age gives you an excuse to skip leg day? Nice try, but California bodybuilder Jim Arrington strongly begs to differ. The 85-year-old has just been named the world’s oldest male bodybuilder by Guinness World Records, and is all the inspiration you need to get through your mid-week slump.
Arrington told People that his fitness journey didn’t begin with him having a natural talent for weightlifting—he’s been working hard his whole life, and just never stopped. As a 13-year-old kid, he was frequently ill, and unable to run 15 yards without wheezing. One day, inspired by bodybuilding magazines he’d read, he ordered a 25-cent booklet full of exercises. Initially, he did it just to impress the ladies.
“I decided that I was interested in girls around this time, and working out would be helpful in that department!” he said. Since then, Arrington has competed in over 60 competitions in his lifetime, winning 16. At 85, Arrington is still actively competing in competitions, although the pool of competitors is starting to dwindle as he gets older.

“Unless someone else older than me comes along, I’m sweeping the competition,” he joked. “I have small bones and I would never be able to put on the size to become Mr. America, so I guess my strategy was to outline and outweigh everybody by waiting until everybody grew up or died!”
Arrington admitted that his workout regimen has gone down in both weight and intensity as he’s aged— after all, he’s 85—but the passion is still there in full force.
“I usually exercise two to three times a week for about an hour, and it’s a full body workout,” he said.
This guy’s probably got at least 30 years on you, and if you’ve ever thought about bodybuilding, he’s got some advice for you: Stop thinking, and start doing.
“Everyone always says there’s something they have to work on a little more, and they say they aren’t ready yet, they tell themselves they’ll compete later,” he said. “You can’t look at it that way, you need the experience—you just have to do it.”
